This was a large 14 x 24" watercolor painting commissioned by the person who took the picture.I really enjoyed the colorful costumes and in particular the Llama,...and yes, I did think it was a lamb.
Below is a very quick video to show some of the process
I have had people ask if I trace the image on the canvas and I actually don't have any issue with people doing that because painting is hard enough.I wanted to show just how messy it is at the begging and how the image starts to morph into the final piece.
Although the photo I took had a slight smile, I had to add the big smirk because if you know the man he is always smiling and positive. It has been a great privilege to get to know him so well and I deeply appreciate what he does and his global mission. I created this video to acquaint my audience with the technique I used to paint Thick Nhat Hanh, a Vietnamese Zen Buddhist monk, teacher, author, poet and peace activist.I did a preliminary ink study in black and white and then I decided to enlarge it. This Summer I visited Madrid, Spain. As I strolled through the Retiro park, I took a photo which inspired me to make this painting. I was fascinated with the luminous turquoise color of the sky and the contrast of the pale violet ground. Its 12"x 24" oil on wood panel.
